This is done by analyzing the characteristic energies of photons emitted by an atom relaxing after an excitation by an electron beam, e.g. in a scanning electron microscope (SEM). This method requires a suitable instrument to detect and analyze these photons.
\nFor energies above a few hundred eV this is conveniently done by energy dispersive X-ray emission spectroscopy (EDX) using an energy dispersive detector.
